What you need to ask, what you need to know in 2016.
So you want to build a website – or at least you need to build a website – or maybe your company needs something entirely different.
• A Free Personal Blog
• A Plug and Play Site Builder: Wix vs Squarespace vs Weebly vs etc.
• A CMS (Content Mangement System): Wordpress vs Joomla vs Drupal vs etc.
• A Web Designing Firm
• Something entirely different
What’s do you really need? It’s a question that can be overwhelming. But the answer is quite simple. It really boils down to the following:
If you are just one person who has a lot to say about things you enjoy – use a free blog. We recommend the free WordPress version, because it is so good with the search engines and so easy to use. Or use a plug and play site builder, like Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, etc. (Wix is great!)
If you are a small business with no tech skills and no money to put into tech skills, go for the plug and play website builders mentioned above.
If you are a small to medium business with some tech skills, you’re better off going with a CMS (Content Management System), like WordPress, Joomla or Drupal (mentioned in order of difficulty). We tend to recommend WordPress, because it is the easiest to put together and to train others to use. (We’ve taught people how to use their entire WordPress website in under 30 minutes over the phone!) You’ll want these CMS systems because they allow you control over things that site builders do not.
If you are a medium to large business with a budget, you still might want to consider using a CMS that you build yourself, just because it is so easy and cost effective to train staff to use. Or hire a firm to build a WordPress site for you, using a tailored template made just for you.
Or consider forgoing a website and using only Social Media tools.
